They do not absorb the intense heat given by the sun like metal houses do. Wood stays quite temperate, especially if painted a light color. Be sure the roof is sloped to allow for rain water to run off easily. Terra cotta (ceramic) birdhouses are a nice accent to any garden, but can also absorb water and stay wet and well as get quite hot. Painted wooden birdhouses can last for many years, even in the harshest of elements.
